Kylie Finds a Loving Home

While we celebrate all adoptions here at LHS, we had one very special adoption yesterday that we are celebrating a little extra today. We hope Kylie's happy tail brings a smile to your face on this dark, rainy Monday morning!

In early August, our Humane Agent seized 6 dogs, all husky/shepherd mixes, from a home in Lake County. These 2 adult dogs and 4 puppies were severely neglected, forced to live outside without adequate shelter, food, or water. All 6 dogs were very poorly socialized, making them completely terrified of new people and situations. Kylie was a little more brave than some of the other dogs from the home, but even she would tremble and hide at first (as you see in the top right photo).

Fast forward through 7 weeks of rehabilitation, and now Kylie is in a loving home where she will live inside and get to experience what being part of a family is all about. This collage, sent to us by Kylie's adopter, shows that with love, patience, and consistency, dogs can be some of the most resilient creatures. Despite being mistreated and neglected by her previous owner, Kylie is learning to trust again and she's learning what it feels like to be loved and cherished. Kylie has only been in her new home for one night, and already you can see just how happy she is to be home. This is what we want for all of the animals that enter our care and these photos make us proud to say that we truly helped a dog in need.

Kylie and Kairo, one of the puppies in the home, are both living great lives with families who love them. Just as they've always deserved. Kyodie (the other adult dog), and the remaining puppies, Killian, Kellan, and Karley, are still being rehabilitated by loving, devoted LHS foster families and staff members. The remaining 4 dogs were much more fearful than Kylie and Kairo, so they will need more time learning to adjust to new situations and learning to trust humans again. They are all making significant progress, and we look forward to getting photos of them from their future adopters with beautiful smiles on their face just as Kylie has below.

We cannot thank our staff, volunteers, fosters and adopters enough for understanding that some dogs need a little more time, patience, and nurturing. These dogs had some serious healing to do, and it warms our hearts to watch firsthand as they do just that.

We'd also like to thank you, our supporters, for making the work we do here at Lake Humane possible. Without your support, we would never have the resources needed to care for animals in need like Kylie. Your donations make it possible for our Humane Agent to fight animal cruelty and neglect right here in Lake County. YOU made it possible for us to provide these dogs with love, care, shelter, a warm bed, food, medical attention and treatment for the last 7 weeks. Thank you for believing in the work we do and for saving neglected dogs, like Kylie, who need us the most.

While Kylie has found a loving home, we still have so many pets in need here at LHS. We currently have 28 dogs and puppies, 151 cats and kittens, and 27 small animals in our care. Additionally, our wonderful foster families are providing care to another 50 pets in their homes. That's over 250 pets counting on us for not only food, shelter, and care, but they all also require a medical evaluation, behavior evaluation, and vaccinations and preventatives. Many of the pets that enter our care need to be spayed/neutered before they can be adopted and some even require other surgeries, treatments, and medications for medical conditions. Donations made by you, our supporters, make it possible for us to care for 250 pets each and every day. Pets like Kylie.

While we are so happy for Kylie, we know there are many more neglected and abused pets out there just waiting for our help. There are also countless pets currently on our waiting list because their families can no longer keep them. Please help us save them. They all deserve a second chance, and you can make that possible. Please consider donating today. Your donation, no matter the size, will help us continue to fight for these animals in most need day after day. Please visit our website to make a one-time or monthly recurring donations now. Your donation will be put to immediate use in our lifesaving work. Please make a donation today!

22nd Annual Mutt Strut to Benefit Homeless Pets in Lake County

Can you believe it's already mid-July? We can't either! But we just can't contain our excitement for our 22nd Annual Mutt Strut which is less than 4 weeks away! We hope you'll join us on Saturday, August 6th at Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland for this day of fun for the whole family. Mutt Strut is a family- and dog-friendly event held each year to benefit the homeless pets in Lake County. This event gives the members of our community the perfect opportunity to help the animals in need in their very own community. Learn More About Mutt Strut!

Before joining us on August 6th, start fundraising for homeless pets by creating an online fundraising page today! Fundraising for Mutt Strut is simple, but it means so much! Once you've created your fundraising page, simply share it on social media, email it to all of your friends, family, and coworkers, and talk about your dedication to helping homeless pets at LHS with everyone you know! Be sure to set a challenging fundraising goal in order to help as many pets as you can! Each fundraiser will be eligible for different prizes based on the total they raise! Not sure what to set your fundraising goal at? Here are some common goals our fundraisers set along with the impact you will help make by reaching your goal:

$100 will provide initial vaccines for four pets in our care
$250 will help LHS spay/neuter a litter of puppies/kittens before finding them loving homes!
$500 will help us fight cruelty and neglect by fueling our Humane Investigations vehicle for 2 months
$750 will allow us to provide shelter, food, medication, and care to 18 pets for 1 week
$1,000 will allow us to provide care to each cat that enters one of our cat cages for an entire year
$1,500 will allow us to provide care to each dog that enters one of our dog cages for an entire year
$2,000 will allow us to provide emergency surgery to a pet in desperate need

The success of this fundraising event relies on the support of our community and the fundraisers who believe in our cause. With your help, we hope to raise $30,000 for the injured, abused, and abandoned animals right here in Lake County. We can't do that without you! Start fundraising today!

Rocky
My name is Rocky, and I am a handsome, friendly guy. I am quite curious, and when going on long walks, I enjoy exploring my surroundings. I came to Lake Humane from another shelter that was out of room, and I now need to find my all-adult, furever home where I will get the love and attention I deserve. So if you are looking for a sweet, playful companion to accompany you on long walks, just ask for Rocky. Please come see me!

Wakka
My name is Wakka, and I am a sweet, happy boy. I enjoy going on long walks, at which time I will demonstrate my good leash manners. And when you stop, I will lean on you to get as close as possible. I also am housebroken and crate trained, and know the commands sit and down. I came to the shelter because my previous owner was moving and felt I was too active to take with them. I now need to find my furever home where I will get lots of love and attention as a treasured member of the family. Because of my sweet personality, I would get along well with children of all ages, as well as with other canine and feline siblings (pending a visit). So if you are looking for a friendly, affectionate, active guy to accompany you on long walks, just ask for Wakka. Please come see me!

Simba
My name is Simba, and I am shy, sweet kitty with gorgeous round eyes. I am very affectionate and truly enjoy being petted. I came to the shelter because my previous owner did not have enough time for me. I now need to find a furever home where i will get the attention I need as a treasured member of the family. So if you are looking for calm, affectionate kitty, just ask for Simba. Please come see me!

Prince
My name is Prince, and I am a calm, sweet kitty. I truly enjoy (demand) being petted, at which time I will rev up my purring motor and give you major head-butt hugs. I came to the shelter because my previous owner was moving and could not take me with them. I now need to find my furever home where I will receive a lot of love and attention as a treasured member of the family. So if you are looking to add some royalty to your life with a calm, affectionate kitty who likes (demands) to be petted, just ask for Prince. Please come see me!

Alla
Alla and 67 other neglected pets entered our care due to 3 hoarding cases in Lake County. Some of these animals required more medical treatment and attention, and in Alla's case, that treatment includes medicated baths multiple times a week to help heal her skin. Despite her previous situation and having to go through treatment, Alla has been patient and sweet through it all. This 8-year-old is in good spirits and insists on taking her tennis ball with her where ever she goes. She is a special soul and we believe know matter who looks at her, they can just see it in her eyes. Visit this wonderful girl at LHS and see her for yourself. You won’t regret it!

Carly
This beauty is Carly. Carly is considered, by our volunteers and staff, as a top-notch snuggler. She is very affectionate, loving, and is at her happiest when she is as close to you as she can possibly get. Carly was surrendered into our care as a stray by the Good Samaritan who found her. Now, after being out in the world all alone, she is ready to find a new home where she will feel safe and loved, and treated like a treasured member of the family. Can you give Carly the furever home she deserves? She is waiting! Carly is still waiting to be fixed, but is now accepting applications.

Boots
This handsome, friendly boy is 1-year-old Boots. He is very playful, affectionate, and loving. Boots was surrendered to us by his previous owner because they had too many animals. He now hopes to find a furever home where he will get the one-on-one love and attention he never had, but always desereved. So pay Boots a visit. He just might be the next great addition to your family! Boots is still waiting to be fixed, but is now accepting applications.

Sophia
This gorgeous little girl is Sophia. Sophia came to LHS as a feral stray with her sister Stella and her brother Sam. These youngsters were terrified, but quickly learned we are not gong to hurt them. Sophia and her siblings spent some time in a foster home where they were given much love, TLC, and socializing to build up their confidence in people. Sophia is now a loving cuddler with a motor that runs non-stop. She is still easily startled, however, and is going to be slow to adjust to the new furever home she hopes to soon find. So if you believe you have the time, patience and room in your heart (and home) for this shy young lady, visit her at LHS today!

Don't quite see what you are looking for? No worries! There is plenty more where they came from.

May is National Foster Care Month

In honor of #NationalFosterCareMonth, we would like to give a special shout out to all of our wonderful and dedicated fosters. While fostering kittens and puppies can be a lot of fun, it also requires a lot of time and hard work. Whether our fosters are waking up every 3 hours to bottle feed some motherless babies, taking care of an injured dog or cat needing some extra love or medication, or offering the quiet and comfort of their home to a senior pet nearing the end of their life, our fosters play a huge role in helping us save thousands of lives every year. Their kindness, dedication, and passion for what they do is truly amazing and has inspired many to follow in their foot steps. So to our many foster out there, we truly do not know what we would do without you and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all that you do. We could not continue our lifesaving work without you!
